Abstract

Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is a valuable diagnostic tool for fiber optic systems. Single photon counting is an established technique for the detection of backscattered light.1,2 Distinctive features of such a technique are high resolution and absence of preamplifier saturation, since the signal to be processed is almost standard [single electron response (SER)]. This suggests that OTDR without dead space is possible with single photon counting setups.
