Abstract

Polarization diversity receivers are required for coherent optical communication along conventional optical fibers which do not preserve polarization.1 These receivers have already been built with bulk optic components.2,3 We report what we believe to be the first integrated optic version of such a receiver. The device is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of two input waveguides, one a 3-dB directional coupler, two adiabatic polarization splitters, and four output waveguides.
