Abstract

Semiconductor optical amplifiers(SOA) have recently been shown to be capable of performing a variety of optoelectronic functions in fiber-optic networks and optical signal processors[l,2]. In this role, the SOA serves as an electronically controllable, dynamically adjustable gain element. Examples are self- clocked optical regeneration, NRZ-to-RZ signal format conversion, selective optical channel read-out[1], and optical Gb/s amplification/modulation[2].
