Abstract

With rapid progress presently occurring in fabricating erbium doped fiber amplifiers for lightwave communications around 1530 nm, diode laser pumping with efficient power coupling to singlemode fibers is required for practical applications. Two such pump bands, 980 and 1490 nm, are available. To obtain high gain and high signal power, high power (broad-area) pump lasers should be used.
