Abstract
Er3+-doped fiber is a promising optical amplifier because of its low noise characteristics(1), low-loss coupling to the transmission line, and polarization-independent gain(2). These features are advantageous compared to semiconductor laser amplifiers. However, previous studies of this active fiber used gas or dye lasers as a pump source. Therefore, to make Er3+-doped fiber a practical device, laser-diode (LD) pumping must be achieved.
