The measurement of the frequency response of a photodiode typically involves comparing the measured frequency response to a previously calibrated photodiode or optical receiver. We compare three different techniques for calibrating the reference photodiode. Two techniques use modulated light, one with an optical modulator and one by mixing two lasers operating at different frequencies (a heterodyne system). A third method uses a short optical pulse formed by gain-switching a laser diode.
