Wavelength selective Interlayer directionally grating-coupled InP/ InGaAsP waveguide photodetection

Abstract

Advances in the sophistication of III–V optical devices require improvements in the compatibility of active emitters, detectors, and modulators and the low-loss waveguide structures needed for filters, couplers, and resonators. Here we demonstrate a narrowband InP/InGaAsP photodetector utilizing interlayer, or vertical, directional grating-coupling. This device is based on contra- directional waveguide coupling and employs a permanent corrugated-layer grating. The previous demonstration of interlayer directional grating-coupling employed a codirectional geometry using a transient optical-interference- induced free carrier grating in an optically pumped InP/InGaAsP laser structure.1 Both experiments have employed an antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) geometry as discussed below.
