Abstract

Reliability issues concerning optical waveguides for use in harsh environments have promoted interest in developing materials and processing techniques that overcome long-term aging effects which can degrade fiber performance. Two long-term reliability issues for silica-based optical waveguides are strength degradation by static fatigue and optical loss increases due to hydrogen diffusion into the lightguide structure.
