Abstract

The distribution of voice, data, and video services to the subscriber is one of the next major steps In the evolution of optical fiber communication systems. Although a completely switched all-digital subscriber network has been proposed,¹ at present the high cost of the digital electronics and the large data rates required for each video channel make such systems difficult to justify economically.
