Although taper lenses are mostly used for coupling laser diodes (LDs) or edge-emitting diodes (ELEDs) to single-mode fibers for specific applications, e.g., isolators and WDM devices, coupling schemes consisting of microoptical lenses with focal lengths in the millimeter range are employed. Moreover these microoptical lenses are advantageous due to larger alignment tolerances and hermeticity.
