Abstract
Distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are of interest for their possible use in coherent and wavelength-division-multiplexed systems. The former application requires a narrow linewidth and matched pairs of devices, while the latter requires lasers with closely spaced wavelengths. Linewidth reduction by detuning the lasing wavelength from the gain peak is currently of interest.1,2 We report on the properties of buried heterostructure (BH) DFB lasers for the first time (to our knowledge) fabricated entirely using atmospheric pressure MOVPE and electron-beam defined gratings. Data are presented to show the large range of detuning which can be achieved and the minimum linewidth obtained.
