Abstract

There have been several efforts to develop multi-gigabit transmission systems[1]. With regard to the bit-rate-distance product, the highest system reported to our knowledge achieves 554Gb·km/s for direct detection systems using direct modulation of DFB LD and dispersion shifted fiber[2] and 404Gb·km/s for coherent transmission system[3]. Direct detection systems suffer from fiber chromatic dispersion. However, coherent transmsion systems can compensate for waveform distortion due to fiber chromatic dispersion using electrical circuits[4].
