Abstract
An inherent limitation affecting traveling-wave integrated-optical modulators is the walk-off between the modulating microwave signal and the optical signal, which imposes a trade-off between drive voltage and bandwidth. A relevant figure of merit directly reflecting the quality of a given class of device independent of length is the bandwidth-to-drive voltage ratio (BVR).
