Abstract
The chromatic dispersion in single-mode optical fibers consists of three components1: material dispersion Mw; waveguide dispersion and profile dispersion Mρ. For weakly doped fibers, the material dispersion closely resembles that of fused silica, and, especially for long wavelengths, the profile dispersion almost equals zero. For weakly doped single-mode fibers, we may, therefore, approximate the total dispersion by the sum of the waveguide dispersion and the material dispersion of fused silica.
