Abstract
The performance of an optical communication system is quantified through the measurements of bit error rate (BER) as a function of received power. The BER depends on the SNR and is affected by various noise sources, e.g., circuit noise, shot noise, mode-partition noise, reflection-induced noise, and noise arising from relaxation oscillations and wavelength chirp. Since different noise sources contribute differently to the BER, it is important to estimate their relative importance to the overall system performance. This paper presents the results of such a noise analysis and compares the numerically simulated BER curves with those observed experimentally.
