The standardization activities relating to broadband aspects of ISDN started in CCITT in 1985. At the beginning a simple extension of the H-channels Serie to cover new broadband services- was envisaged, but this activity leads to the study of a new transmission and switching technique named "New Transfer Mode" and a possibly new transmission hierarchy.
