A 4Gbps OPTICAL REGENERATIVE REPEATER AND ITS FIBER TRANSMISSION EXPERIMENTS

Abstract

Along with the progress in optical transmission technologies, ultra high-speed optical fiber transmission experiments using a long wavelength light signal have demonstrated great potential for large capacity, long-haul transmission systems 1–3. Especially, Gbps class transmission technologies are regarded as a key to realize new backbone networks for a next-generation broadband-ISDN. Extensive studies on several-Gbps optical transmission capabilities have been done in this context, however, with insufficient thought of the system feasibility. This paper reveals a 4Gbps optical regenerative repeater which fully provides so called 3R functions by using an 1.3μm DFB-DC- PBH LD4, an InGaAs APD5, a surface-Acoustic wave(SAW) filter and a high-speed decision circuit.
