Optical fibers for adverse environments

Abstract

Many telecom and datacom applications subject optical fibers to extremes of stress, temperature, moisture, hydrogen containing gases, or combinations of the above. Since hydrogen and hydroxyl ions diffuse readily through organic buffer layers and hydrogen diffuses through the silica cladding as well, one approach to protect the fiber against time- dependent mechanical or optical degradation is to surround it with an impervious hermetic barrier.
