Simple high-performance mechanical splice for single-mode fibers

Abstract

Low-loss (<0.2-dB) single-mode fiber splicing techniques require precision (0.1-μm) electromechanical positioners to provide x and y translation for core alignment. Bonding with UV cement,1 or arc,2 or flame fusion is used for alignment retention.
