Abstract
Development of IR transmitting fibers made of new materials is in progress in many laboratories throughout the world. The materials may be classified as heavy metal oxide glasses, fluoride glasses, chalcogenide glasses, and metal halide crystals. In making long fibers for telecommunication use, glasses seem to be superior to crystals at present. To date, most work has been to reduce optical-fiber losses, which have been far higher than predicted values.
