Abstract
The very high capacity of the Bell System's new FT4E Lightwave System, currently under development, requires that system reliability and ease of maintenance be maximized. For this reason, an in-service performance monitor (ISPM) system has been designed to monitor regenerator performance.1,2 Within each regenerator,3 an ISPM daughter board monitors parity violations as well as six other key analog parameters (Fig. 1). These are: linear channel AGC voltage; receiver photocurrent; laser prebias; laser stud temperature; laser backface photocurrent (i.e., current from an optical detector placed behind the laser backface); and loss-of-clock.
