First single-mode optical-fiber cable link in live telephone service in U.S.A

Abstract

On 14 Sept. 1983, the first single-mode optical-fiber cable link in the U.S.A. was placed in live telephone service by Continental Telephone of New York. As shown in Fig. 1, the 37-km (23-mile) distance was spanned between the Norwich and Sidney exchanges, with no intermediate repeaters required. The fiber cable was supplied by Siecor Corp. The end-to-end cable loss specification was 25 dB. The original engineering calculations had predicted an end-to-end loss of 22 dB. The average measured end-to-end loss for the four single-mode fibers was 21.5 dB. The splicing was accomplished with a Siecor fusion splicer modified to handle single-mode fibers.
