Abstract
Recent development of fiber-optic technologies has made possible the implementation of fiber-optic subscriber systems. Because of the well-known characteristics of optical fibers, fiber-optic subscriber systems will provide various new communication services. There is a marriage of telecommunication and broadcasting services. However, there are many technical and economical factors to be considered before optical fibers can be introduced into subscriber loops, since the subscriber loop plant is the biggest investment target in the telecommunication network, and subscriber systems are the key to opening a new telecommunication age.
