Abstract

It is well known that optical power reflections induce Intensity noise1 in laser diodes. This noise can degrade fiber-optic system performance. We describe feedback-induced spectral changes that occur in multilongitudinal-mode lasers which are packaged with fiber pigtails. These spectral changes and the resulting effects on system performance for single-mode pigtails are different from that for multimode fiber pigtails.
