Low and high fiber count single-mode cables: design and performance

Abstract

Experience with design and performance of cables using single-mode fibers has been limited so far. The higher microbending sensitivity of single-mode fibers compared with multimode fibers means that special precautions in the cable design are imperative. All loose cable structures show some ad- vantage over tight structures not only from the point of view of long-term mechanical reliability but also from optical stability.
