Abstract

The core diameters of six graded-index fibers from four different fiber manufacturers were compared using the transmitted near-field (TNF), the refracted near-field (RNF), and the transverse interferometric (TI) measurement methods. This study was part of a standardization effort to develop a recommended industry-wide definition of core diameter and to determine the precision of inter-laboratory core diameter measurements using different measurement techniques. The core diameter was defined from the refractive-index profile as that diameter passing through the core center and intersecting the index profile at the points n3.
