Abstract

A high capacity single-mode lightwave system designed for intercity transmission was assembled in late 1982 in Atlanta. This system operates at line rates of either 144 or 432 Mb/s, thus enabling either one or three standard CCITT fourth-level bit streams (CEPT 4) to be transmitted, along with the necessary overhead for parity error monitoring , telemetry, order wire, and other administration functions. Two-channel wavelength division multiplexing has also been demonstrated with this system.
