Evidence of static fatigue of silica in hermetic environments

Abstract

In the fiber-optics industry, current interest about the static, or dynamic, fatigue of optical fibers centers around accurate prediction of fatigue lifetimes based on readily available laboratory data. Although the influence of temperature, humidity, chemical acidity, loading rate, and stress on the static fatigue behavior has been addressed by various investigators,1,2 little is known about fatigue behavior in hermetic environments or at very slow crack growth velocities (<10—13 msec-1). Since knowledge of the static fatigue behavior in these regimes would be useful for lifetime predictions, a series of static fatigue tests utilizing metal-coated silica fibers was conducted. Results of static fatigue tests on metal-coated fibers have been shown to be independent of the external environment.3
