Abstract
Single-mode fibers offer the lowest loss and highest bandwidth which can be achieved in current optical waveguides. Various fiber designs made by different technologies are being studied, each with particular advantages. However, it is apparent that even for conventional single-mode fibers a number of parameters must be compromised to achieve optimum performance in telecommunications systems.
