Abstract

In a linear system, the bit rate of transmission is limited by the dispersive characteristic of the fiber material and its design. For a monomode fiber, the group dispersion is the deterministic factor in deciding the rate of puise spread, hence the bit rate. When the optical pulse is Fourier transform limited, the puise spreading occurs due to the variation of the group velocity within the bandwidth, called the group dispersion.
