Abstract
During the past few years, the use of optical fibers as sensing elements has emerged as a significant research area in guided-wave optics, initial interest had centered around rotation rate sensing; however, research now covers acoustic, magnetic, temperature, acceleration, and current sensing. This technology promises greatly increased sensor sensitivities as well as unparalleled geometric versatility in component design.
