Abstract
Fusion welding,1 contact splicing,2 and the use of index-of-refraction matching materials are the three primary techniques used to make low-loss optical fiber connections. While the first two methods are useful for single-fiber splicing, the Bell System silicon-chip array connector3 requires an index-of-refraction matching material.4 This report documents matching material testing and evaluation and presents results for the silicone gel used in several early Bell System applications.
