Abstract
A high speed and compact optical pulse generator with high peak power can provide injection locking of microwave semiconductor sources at gigahertz rates and can be used as a tool for the diagnostic testing (dispersion, loss, transient response) of optical fiber systems. These potential applications provide an incentive for the development of methods which can lead to the generation and time multiplexing of optical pulse trains at gigahertz rates. We have been able to generate pulse trains with ~1-GHz repetition rate and pulse widths of <100 psec (detector-limited) by mode-locking a (GaAI)As injection laser operating in an external optical cavity.
