Abstract

New system applications for fiber optics are beginning to emerge beyond those for telephone trunking and computer interconnection which have been widely discussed and for which components have become widely available. These new applications fall in five broad areas: military strategic, military tactical, rapid/easily deployable, sensor systems, and broadband multiservice. This paper addresses each of these categories using illustrative examples.
