Large preforms produced at high rates by particulate-deposition methods

Abstract

The deposition rate of the MCVD process is determined by the temperature at the inner surface of the substrate tube; both reaction to form particulates and their subsequent vitrification ate controlled by this temperature. Analysis of heat flow taking place during MCVD reveals that the time required to attain a specified wall temperature increases as the wall thickness squared. Recognition of this dependency has led to a novel series of processing steps that produce preforms yielding high-quality fibers in lengths longer than 10 km.
