Abstract
A series of experiments has been performed to determine the effect of axial strain on the optical properties of waveguides coated with various materials. Two sets of experimental data were obtained, stress versus strain and excess optical loss versus strain. The results indicate that the excess loss induced by axial strain depends critically on the mechanical properties of the coating and that the excess loss mechanism is microbending generated at the waveguide-coating interface.
