Abstract

Optical fibers with reduced numerical apertures exhibit an intrinsically lower material loss.1 However, this reduction is generally more than offset by increased microbending losses1 2 as a result of cabling. Most high-quality cables reported to date use Fibers with NA’s greater than 0.21 in order to produce cables with attenuation in the range 3.5 to 4.0 dB/km.
