Abstract

Two-step lateral tapering is proposed as an effective means for semiconductor waveguide mode shaping for improved fiber to waveguide coupling without compromising the waveguide design. Based on this technique, on-chip spot-size converters integrated with shallow etched InP-based waveguides are designed, fabricated and characterized.
