Abstract
We present Rayleigh backscattering and nonlinear effects evaluations and Raman amplification characterizations of single-mode fibers. Rayleigh backscattering dominate the noise generation in small-signal amplifications, while stimulated Brillouin scattering limits high-signal applications. Four-wave mixing is also discussed.
