Abstract

The measurement of atmospheric water vapor in the 940 nm absorption band may be accomplished using sources based on the 4F3/24I9/2 transition in Nddoped fiber amplifiers. We report initial experimental results on the effects co-dopants have on the characteristics of this transition in Nddoped fiber, present modeled and experimental performance of a fiber amplifier, and discuss the trade-offs in designing efficient, fiber-based amplifiers that operate in the 940 nm region.
