Abstract
A simple analytical expression is derived describing the overall noise factor of an optical tree-and-branch network with cascaded optical amplifiers. Splitter excess loss is the key factor determining the optimum gain distribution in the network. Accuracy of the simple equation is checked by complete bi-directional Giles Modeling.
