Abstract

For Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) systems, Four Wave Mixing (FWM) between the channels can yield intermodulation products which degrade performance [1]. The problem is particularly serious over Dispersion Shifted Fibre (DSF) where the fibre zero dispersion wavelength, λ0, is within the WDM transmission window and the FWM strongly phase-matched [2]. This has led fibre manufacturers to develop DSF with finite dispersion in the Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifier (EDFA) transmission window of 1530 to 1560nm, to yield a fibre with the optimum dispersion for WDM systems [3,4]. This fibre is referred to as Non-Zero Dispersion Shifted Fibre (NZ-DSF). The choice of which sign of dispersion gives the best performance depends on SPM/dispersion pulse shaping and, as we demonstrate experimentally, the impact of Modulation Instability (MI).
