Cascaded Semiconductor Optical Phase Conjugators for Dispersion Accommodation in Standard Fibre based All-Optical OTDM Networks

Abstract

Future all-optical networks are expected to be based on a combination of optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) and WDM techniques. A high speed OTDM-bus could for example be attractive for interconnection of WDM networks. Using dispersion shifted fibres ultra high speed OTDM systems have been demonstrated [1]. However, standard non-dispersion shifted fibre constitutes most of the embedded fibre infrastructure, and dispersion accommodation techniques [2] are therefore imperative for an OTDM based upgrading strategy. One promising technique is mid-span spectral inversion using four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). So far this technique has only been demonstrated in point-to-point OTDM transmission, e.g. [3], but for development of a transparent all-optical OTDM network layer, where e.g. add/drop multiplexing is performed in interconnected network nodes, cascadability of the SOA phase conjugators becomes an important issue.
