Abstract

In the last few years, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) for subcarrier multiplexing(SCM) optical transmission systems are developed because of the excellent performances of optical fiber systems and the compatibility with the existing analog FDM systems[1,2], However, in the SCM optical transmission systems the performances are degraded by slight reflections[3], the characteristics of the optical amplification are also degraded by multiple path interference(MPI) of Rayleigh backscattering in EDFs[4]-[8], Although EDF parameters dependencies (Al concentration [4], refractive index difference A[5], and EDF length or Er concentration [8], for example) of the Rayleigh backscattering have been studied, the optimum EDF parameters for the EDFA of SCM transmission have not been clearly shown yet.
