Abstract
We present compact Er37Yb3+ fibre amplifiers pumped directly by a 827nm laser diode. With a 48cm long Er37Yb3+ fibre, the amplifier exhibited a small signal gain of 34.9dB, gain coefficient of 0.77dB/mW and NF of 4.1dB, demonstrating the potential for a cost- effective optical amplifier.
