Abstract

Recently, there has been a great interest in upgrading existing 1.3μm optimized single mode fiber transmission systems to higher bitrates by using Er-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). Several techniques have been proposed to combat the limitation posed by large chromatic dispersion at 1.55μm of the non-dispersion-shifted fiber (NDSF). External modulators with low chirping, for example, are one of the immediate solutions [1]. For higher bitrates such as 10Gbps, however, compensation of dispersion would be ultimately necessary.
