Abstract

Recent advances of long-haul optical amplifier system development based on erbium-doped fibers are remarkable[1]-[6]. The first transoceanic submarine cable system using erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) repeaters will be laid in 1995–1996. It is important to evaluate optically amplified submarine systems at field conditions in order to demonstrate the overall design qualification for commercial undersea use.
