Abstract

The most serious limitation in wavelength-multiplexed transmission systems and networks with cascades of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers appears to be the rapid accumulation of inter-channel power variations, which significantly limit the transmission distance for signal wavelengths that are even slightly detuned from the fiber-amplifiers’ gain peak.
