Abstract

The noise figures (NFs) of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), which are in-line, pre, and post amplifiers in 1.5-µm fiber transmission lines, must be monitored [1], [2]. The NF measuring methods that have been proposed are not feasible for actual systems [3], [4]. This summary describes a novel NF measurement and monitoring method, which yields high resolution and small response time.
