Abstract

Recently, several lightwave systems over 10 Gbit/s have been reported using high-gain, broad-bandwidth erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs)[1,2]. In these systems, the maximum bit rate was often restricted by the broadband electrical amplifiers such as the modulator driver in the transmitter and the equalizer amplifier in the receiver because of their limited gain-bandwidth product. To overcome this problem, we previously proposed a new receiver configuration[2] in which electrical broadband amplifiers were replaced by high-power-EDFAs with a limitless gain-bandwidth product, and a transmitter[3] that consisted of a low drive-voltage and high-speed modulator without any additional modulator-driver. The proposed receiver and transmitter considerably simplify ultra-high speed and long span transmission system configurations and make them easy to manufacture.
